What is energy management?

Energy management is the combination of all measures to ensure minimum energy consumption while meeting the required performance. It relates to structures, processes, systems, structural conditions and human behaviours.

Take advantage of considerable energy savings

A continuous energy management system over a period of several years can realistically save up to 30% in industry and buildings and is economically viable.

Costs for peak loads in companies can be reduced significantly by means of an energy management. Only organisational measures are required for its implementation. A detailed overview of consumptions and load profiles is a good basis for tariff negotiations with the energy supplier.

WEBENCON - Energy data management in accordance with ISO 50001

A healthy balance between economy and ecology

  • Especially in the course of increased environmental pollution and a lack of resources, it is essential for modern companies to get a comprehensive overview of their energy situation. In order to save costs you have to know where they incur. By means of a user-friendly and clearly arranged representation of all recorded costs, it is possible to detect weak points, to discover saving potentials, to assign cost centre IDs and to make a forecast.

Who consumes how much at what time?

  • This is the bottom line of a performing energy data management system. An efficient and sustainable behaviour is only possible via continuous recording, structuring and optimum provision of all relevant energy numbers and parameters. WEBENCON secures a competitive advantage and provides a sustainable improvement of your energy situation and the resulting environmental balance.
  • The implementation of ISO 50001 requires organisational energy management in combination with an energy data management system. GFR has the necessary knowledge for the realisation of efficient EnMS. Our services include the analysis of consumption within your company and an energetic assessment of your enterprise. We support you in the process of implementing organisational energy efficiency measures and during the introduction of our energy data management system WEBENCON. This includes engineering, installing, operating and optimising the EnMS.

WEBENCON meets the requirements for documentation and the proof of energy-related performance improvements which are demanded by ISO 50001.

Data acquisition

The initial situation is a large number of

  • Energy meters and data points (consumption, meter readings, temperatures, operating hours …)
  • Data sources and data structures (M-Bus, Modbus, SAP, EVU, FM)
  • Communication structure (Ethernet, manual, radio ….)
  • Database server and computer centre

This means that energy management software should provide a large number of data collection interfaces.

Important: All collected data are treated equally.

Data output

The initial situation is a large number of different users and requirements:

  • Online processing, export (Excel, SAP, FM, energy certificate …)
  • Consumptions, emissions, costs
  • Analyses, reports, cost statements in different formats, automated, documented and can be sent
  • Fault messages

This means that a large number of data output interfaces should be provided.

Important: Data acquisition is independent of the data output!

Where is energy management used?

Our energy management solutions can be found in all areas: administrative buildings, schools, universities, industry, and trade or in the energy provider field. Using its certified energy management software WEBENCON, GFR is active in all building categories.

Possible areas of application and the key for enhancing energy efficiency for companies of all types and sizes:

The operational energy management also becomes an increasingly important issue in the industry. There are a variety of reasons for that: increasing energy costs and more stringent environmental requirements on one hand and the desired certification in accordance with the energy management standard ISO 50001 on the other hand. Additionally, WEBENCON will help companies to improve their competitiveness by proportionally passing on fixed and production-linked variable energy costs to the product costs.

Energy data management systems create a high level of cost transparency, detect considerable saving potentials for energy and costs and illustrate different energy issues. WEBENCON identifies and defines required key figures and basic data for machines, refrigeration plants, processing and production processes, production halls, warehouses and office buildings to enable an energetic evaluation.

Administration buildings

Administration and office buildings are particularly demanding in terms of energy data management software and the organisational energy management. They often require more energy or more money for cooling in summer than heating in winter. The user behaviour plays a significant role: if you compare administrative and office buildings with facilities of different utilisations, you will find out that the user has an above-average influence on energy consumption. WEBENCON in combination with our energy management services detects energy saving potentials to enable an economic and sustainable development.

Schools and universities

Municipalities, public organisations and training centres like schools and universities suffer from a scarcity of financial resources and have to save money. A major approach for saving money lies within the energy costs as there is a hidden enormous and undiscovered saving potential which has to be taken advantage of. An energy data management in connection with an effective measuring concept helps identifying low-investment potentials for increasing the energy efficiency. WEBENCON provides the basic information to allow a targeted and optimised use of all instruments for stock renewal. The proven rule also applies for saving energy: A small leak will sink a great ship.

Hospital managers are changing their views as it relates to energy supply. This fact is supported by an increasing cost pressure in the health care market and cost saving potentials in the field of energy supply. Planning and implementing measures which are aimed at the rational use of energy requires an energy data management system which can represent the highly complex energy consumption structures in hospitals. WEBENCON knows manifold components of technical hospital equipment and provides all necessary modules for the integration of special communication interfaces.

Trade and commerce

The functional diversity of the energy management software is an important criterion for assessing an energy data management system. It shall be flexible with regard to migration, changes in the use of area and its size, branch structures, opening hours and customer frequencies. Furthermore, especially in trade, it has to be able to integrate national branch networks in a system. Different climatic conditions, categories and sizes of branches with varying features must be taken into consideration as well. WEBENCON is web-based and client capable and enables automatic evaluations and proportional utility billing. It considers branch-specific issues and meets the specific requirements of trade.

Energy supply companies

Energy supply companies increasingly act as energy management service providers in order to obtain long-term customer loyalty. They make customers aware of using their energy effectively and offer energy consulting and contracting. Energy supply companies often maintain and operate the plants of their customers from different locations. The customers are at different places as well. Therefore the network and client capability of the energy data management system and the automation and communication of evaluations are of great significance. WEBENCON generates energetic information which allows recognizing energy and costing saving potentials. These data serve as a basis for the optimisation of operational processes, the use of energy-efficient equipment and systems and for the composition of conventional and renewable energy sources.

Communication media and networks

Interfaces for data collection

M-Bus (Meter-Bus) is a frequently used field bus, especially for the collection of consumption data (integration via server connection or gateway).

Energy measuring systems or PCs can be connected by using the Modbus communication protocol (integration via server connection or gateway).

KNX (Konnex) is applied for the decentralised networking of sensors and actuators. WEBENCON uses the interface for the collection of energy data, e.g. from KNX electricity meters.

LONMark (Local Operating Network) is used for networking sensors and actuators in the field of building automation. WEBENCON applies this interface if it is required to collect LON meter data (integration via server connection or gateway).

PROFIBUS DP (Process Field Bus - Decentralised Peripherals) are particularly used in manufacturing and process technology and ensure the communication  of devices by different manufacturers.

A web service is a service which is heterogeneously distributed in web systems and usable for all applications. WEBENCON automatically imports data via XML by means of web services from the internet.

BACnet is a communication protocol for „Building Automation and Control Networks“ and allows data sharing of different systems and manufacturers.

OPC (OLE for Process Control) is a standardised software interface which enables applications of different manufacturers to exchange data. The WEBENCON OPC client facilitates the connection of all available OPC servers of any system.

All consumption data and further data from DIGICONTROL building automation systems and WEBVISION building management systems are also directly available within WEBENCON.

WEBENCON offers manual data input via smart phone or tablet PC with previous route planning for the manual collection of energy data.

ODBC (Open Database Connectivity) is a standardised database interface which is used by SQL as database query language. The WEBENCON SQL database server allows data exchange with other SQL databases via ODBC.

The file format CSV (Comma-Separated Values) describes the structure of a text file for the purpose of saving or the exchange of data. Most IT systems on basis of a database can generate files in the CSV format which can be imported into the SQL database by WEBENCON. Selected data from IT systems of the client, e.g. ERP merchandise management systems, BDE operating data logging, SCADA - Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition or FM / CAFM - Computer Aided Facility Management can be imported automatically into the energy data management system.

Visualisation and data output

Each energy management system (EnMS) is based on data which are provided by different systems and sources. The more manifold the information are, the more detailed and comprehensive the evaluations and functions are which are provided by the energy data management system to its users and other IT systems. WEBENCON contains a wide variety of interfaces for data acquisition which is a prerequisite for the integration of an energy data management system in existing structures.

You just need a common server on the operator stations to run WEBENCON. The visualisation of the energy data by means of WEBENCON is distinguished by user-friendliness, clarity and comprehensibility and allows operating the system intuitively.

The Excel templates within WEBENCON make it possible to tailor all evaluations and cost overviews to individual user needs. In this way the user can easily implement his simple or complex layout wishes and calculations.

WEBENCON automatically sends evaluations and cost overviews as Excel files and/ or, if necessary, as PDF files by email.

Transferring selected energy data to other IT systems, e.g. ERP merchandise management systems, BDE operating data logging, SCADA - Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition or FM / CAFM - Computer Aided Facility Management can be realized via CSV files. WEBENCON individually generates CSV files which are suited to the structures of external IT systems.

ODBC (Open Database Connectivity) is a standardised database interface which is used by SQL as database query language. The WEBENCON SQL database server allows data exchange with other SQL databases via ODBC.

By linking the databases of WEBENCON with WEBVISION, all energy data are available for the technical facility management. Being based on the evaluations of the provided information, production and building processes can be optimised event driven.

The quality of an energy data management system does not only depend on its diversity of data collection but also on its user-friendliness, clarity and comprehensibility of visualisations and it should have a wide range of capabilities for structuring and outputting data. WEBENCON offers a wide variety of options for the processing and output of data and it therefore meets the requirements for the integration of the energy data management system in existing structures.
