The Zollverein colliery in Essen was shut down in 1986 - but it hasn' t become quiet about Germany's best-known colliery with its characteristic 55-metre-high double-rack winding tower in the middle of the Ruhr - rather the opposite. After the area was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2001, it is open to everyone. Today's use of the huge site is very flexible, e.g. as an event location, business start-up centre or as an educational location.

Designated as a "unique place for experiences", with a varied programme of events, diverse rooms for e.g. conferences, seasonal highlights such as an ice rink or a factory swimming pool and converted factory halls, the UNESCO World Heritage Zeche Zollverein in Essen as an industrial monument requires high standards of automation technology, in particular building automation and room automation.
