"Energy Efficiency Award" - also a success for GFR systems

The company Weidmüller Interface GmbH & Co KG in Detmold manufactures and sells products in the field of electromechanical connectivity as well as control cabinet electronics and network infrastructure components. The company was awarded the 1st prize of the international "Energy Efficiency Award" for increasing energy efficiency in April 2007. By replacing electric heat with heat from a highly efficient combined heat and power plant and consistently heat recovery, the company was able to achieve significant energy and cost savings. The investment in energy efficiency measures amortised in just four months, with a remarkable return on investment of 300%.

The GFR systems DIGICONTROL, WEBVISION and WEBENCON are used for the entire building automation and building management at Weidmüller Interface.

They control and manage the award-winning plant concept: a natural gas-fired combined heat and power plant used in the course of the expansion of the electroplating department generates electricity and heat all year round according to the principle of combined heat and power generation. By substituting the electric heating of the electroplating baths and parts of the operational hot water preparation, around 775,000 kWh of electricity are saved annually and carbon dioxide (CO²) emissions are significantly reduced. In addition, the fuel requirement for room heating was reduced by about 70 percent through the installation of a heat recovery system and the use of waste heat from the hardening shop and compressor station. The WEBENCON energy data management system is the key to the energy-saving operation of the plants.

GFR automates Weidmüller Technology Center (CTC) in Detmold

Weidmüller is preparing for the future with the construction of a new Customer & Technology Center (CTC) at its corporate headquarters in Detmold. With a total area of just about 12,000 square meters, the building complex offers space for more than 400 employees. According to the company, the electrical engineering specialist places particular emphasis on modern architecture and equipment as well as an energy-efficient building structure in the new building. The energy consumption for cooling and heating is significantly reduced by existing geothermal energy. Technological trends such as digitalisation and industry 4.0 as well as the internationalisation of markets and customers demand a globally networked and interdisciplinary approach. The building, some of which will also be used as a customer centre, will enable this.

Use of geothermal energy by means of geothermal probes

The geothermal heat is used by means of geothermal probes. A geothermal probe is a closed pipe system filled with a circulating heat transfer fluid. This is usually installed in a vertically or, more rarely, slanted drill hole in the underground. Heat is extracted from the ground with the geothermal probe, which in turn is usually passed on to the heat exchanger (evaporator) of a geothermal heat pump. The heat pump enables the cost-efficient use of geothermal energy for heating buildings. In short, the geothermal probe is an opportunity to use near-surface geothermal energy. However, the cooling variant can also be implemented by means of earth probes. Heat from buildings is transferred to the ground by means of the heat pump. The ground therefore serves to cool the heat transfer fluid.
