"North Rhine-Westphalia's largest timber hybrid building" is a real feast for the eyes: seven storeys high, it offers space for the headquarters of SuperBioMarkt AG and other office and commercial space. This is despite the fact that wooden buildings are actually limited by building law to four floors.

The H7 with its striking appearance and the green glazed, ceramic facade panels uses wood-hybrid: a supporting structure construction made of wood and a reinforced concrete construction complement each other.

The name "H7" is therefore almost self-explanatory: The H stands for wood, the 7 stands for seven floors.

GFR provides for comfort maximisation with simultaneous energy savings

In accordance with the company philosophy of the anchor tenant SuperBioMarkt AG, the challenge of implementing high biological construction standards in the building with the goal of low pollutants and low energy consumption emerged during the planning phase.

GFR was able to meet these requirements with technical expertise in the areas of building automation, building management and room automation. GFR has left its mark on the project with solutions for the implementation of efficient automation strategies and complete integration as well as linking of all building services. Comfortably tempered rooms, a pleasant room climate, fresh air for innovative ideas and energy-optimised building operation are a win-win situation for all parties involved.

Great recognition for optimised energy balance and design

The project, which took 13 months to complete, received recognition at the German Timber Construction Award 2017 and one of 12 gold awards at the best architects18 award. Not only do users benefit from the attractive location in the middle of Münster's city harbour on a total area of 4,500 m², they also have a flexible working environment at their disposal for various requirements.

Special attention was paid to fire protection in this innovative office and commercial building. Increased requirements due to the building material wood were the result: All load-bearing wooden components were designed stronger than statically necessary to withstand a theoretical fire duration of 90 minutes.

CO2 savings by means of an energy efficiency mix

By replacing and supplementing concrete and steel with wood, CO2 emissions per cubic metre of wood are reduced by 1.1 tonnes (t) just during the production process. In addition, wood stores a further 0.9 t CO2 per cubic metre. By using wood, around 260 tons of CO2 could be saved compared to a conventional reinforced concrete structure.

Further energy efficiency measures of H7 include the use of available district heating, the high-quality sealed building envelope, a natural ventilation concept and the use of LED technology for lighting. Charging stations for electric cars and e-bikes are available as well.
