The Detmold University of Music (HfM Detmold) enjoys a high international reputation among students and teachers. Excellent learning conditions are created, among other things, by the well-equipped campus with 13 buildings and a total area of around 93,000 m². There are about 800 students from more than 50 nations and the university staff with about 300 employees. Almost everything here revolves around the topic of music. Currently, 34 courses of study are offered at the Detmold University of Music.

The heart of the university complex was reopened in May 2009 after a two-year renovation of the concert hall of the university, which was founded in 1946, and the music returned. The Building and Real Estate Company of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia has not only thoroughly renovated the concert hall for a total volume of 7.5 million Euros but has also carried out a number of structural improvements (e.g. extensive insulation measures, which reduced the energy consumption of the building to one-fifth) without changing the magnificent simplicity, unity and practicality of the original building appearance.

Integrated building system technology from GFR ensures reliable plant operation

Since the GFR systems DIGIVISION and DIGICONTROL have been automating and controlling the entire university complex (including the remote administration building) efficiently and failure-free for several years now, it was logical for the operator to have all GFR technologies applied during the refurbishment integrated into the existing automation and building management structure:

  • The full air conditioning of the building: For energy-efficient operation of the plant technology, modern washer systems with sophisticated heat recovery strategies were used in the measurement and control technology instead of energy-destroying steam humidifiers. In addition, the fresh air is fed through a double floor from below into the concert hall. The conventional supply of fresh air via inlets in the ceiling area has been replaced because it mixes with the used air. But especially because the fresh air has to be brought down with a high impulse by strong and thus noisy fans.
  • A completely new sound engineer technology: a sophisticated air volume management system avoids disturbing background noise during music events.
  • A worldwide unique sound technology: 325 programmable loudspeakers can reproduce and modify all kinds of room acoustics in the concert hall. With this so-called "wave field synthesis", the university has a real unique selling proposition.
  • An innovative lighting system: the stage can now be illuminated from three different angles with the new lighting system.
  • New water technology and effect lighting for the listed historic Palace Garden on the campus.
  • As part of the renovation of the concert hall, the Palace Garden, no less admired beyond the borders of Detmold, was also renovated both technically and aesthetically. Among other things, the turbine for the operation of the water technology (waterways, cascades, water levels) had to be refurbished and a new underwater, tree and path lighting system had to be installed.
  • In addition to the existing 24 sets of controllers (ISPs) for heating, ventilation, air conditioning, sound, lighting, block heat and power station, long-distance piping system for cooling, another five sets of controllers were used for water features and effects within the Palace Garden and fully integrated into the existing GFR property and building management system WEBVISION.

Energy-efficient and trendsetting: New construction of the library building

The Detmold University of Music (HfM Detmold) campus was expanded in September 2015 with the construction of a new library building. GFR systems also automate the building here - for maximum energy efficiency and comfort. Due to the high-quality and valuable literature that is available to the students, the library imposes the highest demands on measurement and control technology. In particular, the focus is on humidity and temperature measurement and control, which GFR meets with considerable technical expertise.
