The refurbishment of building automation systems in existing plants for rational and safe operation is an increasingly important task. The successive replacement of the outdated facilities with the modern and open systems DIGICONTROL and WEBVISION at the University of Paderborn is a good example of efficient modernisation. The majority of the university buildings were built in the 1970s and 1980s and required a technical update. So was the building automation, which was more than 12 years old in many places. It did not meet the modern requirements of rational facility management, neither in terms of control technology nor with respect to communication.

The University of Paderborn, currently home to about 20,000 students and five faculties, offers good study conditions and a wide range of subjects in the humanities, economics, natural sciences and engineering.

The primary objectives of all these guidelines are maximum energy efficiency, maximum comfort, system availability and economical operation of buildings and real estate. GFR achieves these requirements at the University of Paderborn (since 1999) by, among other things:

Data communication and redundancy

Data communication between the individual systems and the building management system as well as high redundancy of the data servers.

Technical monitoring

The entire property of the University of Paderborn is administered by GFR's building management system WEBVISION. By means of technical monitoring, plant components can be visualised or building services such as lifts can be monitored and checked for malfunctions and error messages.

Load and energy management

The maximum load limitation and the energy diary make energy flows transparent and enable the operator to individually control and optimise the energy consumption.

Adaption

Adaptive control circuits automatically regulate their control parameters as well as the switch-on and switch-off times depending on already logged data and "experience". For example, heating systems can be reduced long before the end of the utilisation period.

Forecast

Load and heat demand as well as weather forecasts determine the optimum mode of operation as it relates to cooling, heat and power generators and optimally utilise them under consideration of the level of efficiency.

Demand-based control

Demand-driven automation adapts the energy supply to the actual demand, e.g. the air volume is optimally adjusted due to the actual air quality, the lighting technology is controlled via brightness sensors, pump flow rates are pressure-dependent and operated in accordance with the characteristic curve.

Room automation

Room automation considers and controls the individual room in consideration of occupancy times, actual presence, room temperature and adjusts heating, cooling, ventilation, lighting and shading in accordance with maximum energy efficiency. Room automation functions such as lighting, blinds or media technology are operated using modern ROOM4D room control panels by GFR.

The flexibility of building automation allows uncomplicated modifications

The fact that the University of Paderborn is in a constant state of change can be seen, among other things, in the technical progress, the increased spatial requirements, functional extensions and the construction of new buildings or parts of buildings. This is the only way to ensure that the equipment and buildings of a modern research and learning environment fully comply with future requirements.

Thanks to their flexibility, GFR systems for building automation, building management, room automation and energy management are able to "grow with" the times and adapt quickly and smoothly to changing or completely new requirements.
